Catan is a game that made boardgaming popular across the works. As most of these incredible games, often called Eurogames, come from Germany, so does Catan.
I have had sore fights, people getting so upset that they wouldn’t talk to each other for days, people almost leaving the game midway, deciding to never play again with these people….. all around Catan. Yes, catan brings out the tribal in you! 😊
I was infamous for winning most of the games – especially Catan. People traded with me, tried to block me, tried steal from me, sometimes collided with me, against me but all resulting in an unexpected or in a way expected victory that I would suddenly claim at the end.. There are many places and many memories with different groups of that single feeling.. the sudden silence.. the game is over.. How come we let him win again..
I ended up introducing Catan to a young chap – maybe 7 or 8 years old – he was exceptionally good at picking up the rules of complex games and also beating others at them. According to him I remained the Catan champion. And one day he brought a new game which he taught me: Picturika. Now this one is a simple one, very visual and needs quickly spotting things.. Kids seem to be much better at it.. And he won the game – and instantly he proclaimed: “Catan champion Picturika mein har gaya”. Like someone who wins at a complex game, lost the simpler game. Ever since that day, almost every time he sees me, he greets me wit this sentence.. it’s been 2-3 years but the sentence has remained intake… I’m a positive thinker, I keep focusing on the first half of that sentence.. 😉
